YMCA ANTHONY BOWEN

Welcome  |  Location and Hours  |  Board of Directors

Welcome to YMCA Anthony Bowen!

It has been an exciting year at the YMCA Anthony Bowen. After being here for a full year, I am even more honored to be a part of a YMCA with such a longstanding tradition in the Metro Washington, D.C. community. I continue to see firsthand how this branch is an integral piece of the lives of local children and families. This is a role that the YMCA takes very seriously, a role that we would like to continue enhancing by expanding our current facility and programs.

We are committed to bringing you new programs that will fit the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods of our changing community. By working in conjunction with the businesses and families of this area, we will continue to strengthen the partnership of the YMCA and the Shaw-Cardoza community.

Over the past year, we have made several changes and improvements to our facility and programs with even bigger plans going forward. The newest and most obvious change to our facility is our new fitness component. We now offer full facility memberships for our community at an affordable rate. We have also added the following programs at our YMCA: karate, dance, parent's night out, specialty camps, and holiday camps. We have expanded our swim lessons, our Physically Fit Kids program, and sports program. We continue to strive and improve our core programs of childcare, school-age childcare and camp. We are currently preparing for NAEYC Accreditation and will continue to make changes to improve the overall quality of our childcare programs.

The legacy of Anthony Bowen is that of a proud, purposeful community leader. It is quite a privilege to be charged with leading our Y into a new phase. This is a time of new beginnings, new development, and a time of growth. I truly look forward to working closely with all of you in taking the YMCA Anthony Bowen to even greater heights.

BUILDING STRONG COMMUNITIES - A NEW Y FOR THE NEW U

The rooftop terrace of YMCA Anthony Bowen was the location for a community gathering to announce plans for a new facility designed to serve more people in the fast growing Shaw/Cardozo neighborhood, affectionately called the new U in reference to the re-birth of the U St. corridor at the neighborhood's center.  Several residents and political and business leaders attended the gathering, including Councilmember Jim Graham who
gave his enthusiastic support for the YMCA Anthony Bowen project.

The renaissance YMCA Anthony Bowen will be part of a mixed use space developed by Perseus Realty featuring affordable housing and family friendly businesses. A fusion of the past, present and future, the new YMCA will honor the legacy of the first African American Y in the U.S and its long time members, while reaching out to new residents seeking a place where they can belong.

In order for YMCA Anthony Bowen to continue to be an anchor in the community, we need to hear from you. Please click here and fill out this survey about the programs and services you would like to see the Y bring to you, your friends and family. You may forward your survey to gene.jones@ymcadc.org or fax it to (202) 462-2534. Continue to look to this space for updates about the new Y for the new U.
