Why You Should Teach STEM to Your Kids

STEM is everywhere. It shapes our everyday experiences and is designing our future. It opens the doors to strategic thinking, creative expression and the best careers. Yet only 16% of American high school seniors are proficient in mathematics and interested in a STEM career. For 20 years, summers full of inspired learning STEM from Thingamajig. This past Thursday, 4,029 kids and 400 volunteers took over the Show Place Arena for the YMCA’s 20th Annual Thingamajig Invention Convention. Long before STEM was a buzzword, this event has tapped into curiosity and creativity with over 50 hands-on workshops and 15 invention challenges. The same demographics that lack access to STEM careers spend their summer months building recyclable inventions and anticipating this science playground.

Our #Man2Man mentorship pairs took a tour of Howard University on June 23, 2014. The mentors and mentees spent the day learning about the rich history of the campus. During their visit, they ran into Wrestler Titus O'Neil - WWE and The Lone Ranger Actor, Leonard Earl Howze! The young boys were inspired that they were in the right place at the right time.

Today marks our 19th Annual Thingamajig Invention Convention! Imagine if the next big thing was invented by a 6-year old. Today, over 4,000 DC-area youth will stretch their imagination and creativity at the Y’s Thingamajig Invention Convention. Peaking months of designing and constructing, hundreds of eco-friendly inventions will be debuted with hopes of winning their category – which includes prizes, praise and a party at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
